Arriving at Albion in January 2014, Stephens joined for an undisclosed fee from Championship rivals, Charlton.

Originally from Bolton, the midfielder began his career with Bury before joining Oldham in 2008. Subsequent loan spells with Rochdale and Southampton followed as Stephens notched up 73 appearances during his time with Latics, finding the back of the net 12 times.

A move to Charlton followed and the midfielder was a key part of their 2011/12 League One winning squad. Making 90 appearances during his spell at The Valley, Stephens also chipped in with 11 goals including a memorable goal-of-the-season contender against Bury in his first year with the club.

The midfielder opened his Albion account with a late header at Ewood Park in a 3-3 draw with Blackburn Rovers and also found the net in style during the 1-1 draw with Blackpool at the Amex. However Stephens’ 2013/14 season was brought to a premature end through injury and the midfielder didn’t feature again for nine months, returning in February 2015 away at Cardiff City.

After his return from long-term injury Stephens re-established himself in the first team, making 16 appearances and scoring two goals during the 2014/15 run in, helping the side secure Championship safety.
