Hailing from Leytonstone, Jamie Smith arrived on trial in June 2009, having been released by Crystal Palace the previous may. A diminutive midfielder with a good engine and impressive range of passing skills, the Londoner impressed during his trial period and was handed a one-year deal by Russell Slade ahead of the 2009/10 season. He began his career at Palace, where he was a scholar and spent one year as a professional under Neil Warnock.
