Ashley Barnes originally joined the club on loan from Plymouth Argyle at the end of the 2009/10 season. He made an instant impact, scoring on his debut and going on to net a total of four goals in eight games. The Bath-born striker made the switch permanently for an undisclosed fee in July 2010 on a two-year deal.
