Albion moved out of the relegation zone thanks to a goalless draw against Huddersfield Town.
Gus Poyet is still without a home league win as Albion boss, but he will be satisfied with a dominant display against the high-flying Terriers.
After the free-flowing extravaganza at the Galpharm in August, this was an altogether different affair, with neither side giving much away on a cold Withdean night.
In fact the play-off chasing visitors looked content to play for a draw, although Anthony Kay's goalbound header, which was blocked on the line by Inigo Calderon, was the first half's only chance of note.
Poyet made a couple of changes in a bid to secure his first league win since taking charge, with Chris Holroyd making his full debut and Seb Carole on his first start since joining the club for a third time.
And while the duo buzzed around enthusiastically in the first half they found it difficult to break down the robust Terriers backline.
But after the break Holroyd created Albion's first real chance when he laid off for Liam Dickinson, but the striker's powerful shot was tipped over the bar by Alex Smithies.
From the resulting corner Adam Virgo's shot looked to be heading in, but Robbie Williams managed to block the ball on the line.
Holroyd was playing an increasing role in Albion's attempts to carve the opener, and when Alan Navarro drilled a low cross into the near post, the former Cambridge striker got to the ball first but could only guide it wide.
Albion sensed the game was there for the taking, and substitute Glenn Murray then volleyed just over the bar from Elliott Bennett's corner.
Poyet's men had certainly been the dominant force, but with ten minutes remaining the visitors almost stole the lead when Anthony Pilkington's rasping free-kick clipped the top of the crossbar.
Albion almost had the last laugh though, when Gary Dicker's cross ballooned up off Neal Trotman and had Smithies sprawling backwards to tip the ball over the bar.
So not exactly revenge for the 7-1 defeat, but a vast improvement on the debacle at the Galpharm.
