Albion can look forward to Sunday's second round draw after an extraordinary cup tie at Adams Park which saw eight goal, three penalites and two red cards.

And while the defending on show here might not win any prizes, this barnstorming encounter will certainly be in the running for most entertaining encounter of the round.

Martin Hinshelwood's charges started at an electric pace, and even before Elliott Bennett had given the Seagulls a dream start after three minutes, Nicky Forster had signalled Albion's intent when he forced Scott Shearer into a near-post save, albeit from an offside position.

But moments later Glenn Murray, in for Liam Dickinson, released Bennett through the middle, and the winger raced through unchecked to slot the ball confidently past Shearer for his second goal for the club.

Dean Cox, also recalled by Hinshelwood, then went close with a curling effort from outside the area that only narrowly missed the far upright.

But all of Albion 's hard work and endeavour in the opening spell came undone when referee Simon Hooper judged that Adam Virgo had barged Matt Harrold from behind, and pointed to the spot.

It looked harsh from Albion's point of view, but Wycombe weren't complaining, and Harrold duly converted from 12 yards to level matters.

The equaliser took the wind out of Albion' sails, and when Gavin Hoyte lashed out at Jon-Paul Pittman in the 33rd minute, Brighton's afternoon began to unravel.

Because five minutes later Kevin Betsy crossed from the right and on-loan Reading midfielder Scott Davies swept the ball home first time to give the home side the lead.

Matt Phillips then tested Smith from range, but the Albion keeper parried the fierce drive away.

So it looked bleak for Hinshelwood's men, but there was to be more drama on the stroke of half-time when Craig Woodman bundled Murray over in the area. Hooper produced the red card for a second time, and Forster stroked home the penalty to give the Seagulls a massive boost before the interval.

And the pendulum swung firmly in Albion's favour after the break, when Murray cut inside on his left-foot, and his shot deflected off Lewis Hunt before looping over Shearer and into the net.

Albion's lead lasted just ten minutes though, when the unmarked Pittman controlled Harrold's cross and clipped the ball over the advancing Smith to level matters again.

The rollercoaster continued, because in the 70th minute Harrold turned Phillips's low cross past Smith, and Wycombe were in front for a second time.

There was to be one last twist however, when Matt Bloomfield handled in the area, and Murray was granted the chance to net his second of the day from the spot, and book Albion's place in the velvet bag on Sunday.
