Albion defender Marcos Painter is expecting the level of performance to rise now that the recent summer signings have added competition for places.
After ten days without a game, the Seagulls will host MK Dons on Saturday, and Painter insists every player is fighting for a starting place.
He told seagulls.co.uk, "From day one Gus [Poyet] has said 'no matter who you are, or where you're from; whether you're a big name or you come from a big club, I will always pick the team I think is best.''
"So, we have always got to be performing in games and be at our best in training, and we can't take our positions for granted. Competition is always a good thing for players and when the gaffer is bringing in good players it adds to that competition.
"I want to improve every game and every day I train. If there is someone there challenging me it does bring that extra bit of competition. I want to be playing week in, week out.
"We will have to be at our best on Saturday because MK Dons have had a great start. Although you can't look into the table too much at this stage, they wouldn't be up there if they weren't doing well."
The Albion left-back is also relishing the chance to team up with Kazenga LuaLua again - should they both be selected on Saturday.
The pair forged a good understanding down the left flank during their loan-spell together at the end of last season, and Painter hopes for that to continue.
"We all know what Kaz brings to the squad. You know what you're going to get with him and the standard he brings to the team is brilliant. It's exciting for us, and I look forward to playing with him during the season.
"Thankfully, I have not had to play against him too much in training because he normally plays down the left, so it's me that's supporting him, or trying to catch up with him. But he's looking sharp."
