Under-18s Undone by Gills

Albion youth boss Steve Brown has called for his players to raise their game after losing 4-2 at Gillingham on Saturday.

The Seagulls went behind midway through the first half, after the Gills enjoyed the better of the early possession.

Defender Callum Sheriff got Albion back into the game on the brink of half time, with a towering header from a Jack Shonk free-kick.

Albion began the second half brightly, but Gillingham regained the lead when they tapped home after Albion 'keeper Tom Godfrey failed to keep hold of a long-range free kick.

Minutes later Albion were undone by another set-piece; once again, the Seagulls defence did not deal with a free-kick, and the ball was drilled home from close range.

Things went from bad to worse for Albion when defender Glen Rea turned a low cross into his own net on the edge of the six-yard box to put the Gills 4-1 up.

Albion grabbed a consolation when Chris Cumming-Bart broke down the right and his cross found Conor Hider on the edge of the 18-yard box. Hider then squared to George Hayward, who drilled the ball into the top-right corner.

A disappointed Steve Brown told seagulls.co.uk, "It was a really bad day for the whole team, and there were a few heart-to-hearts needed at the end of the game.

"We have looked vulnerable in defence for a few games now, so that is something that we have got to work very hard at on the training ground.

"On Saturday the lads did not play like footballers worthy of a professional contract with the club, so we have got to be mentally strong, and knuckle down."

Albion trialist Rene Prince played 65 minutes at right back.

Albion: (4-4-2) Godfrey; Prince (Macfarlane 65), Rea (Strong 70), Sherriff, Bolwell; Cumming-Bart, Shonk (Vickers 45), Hayward, Redwood; Goodwin, Hider. Subs not used: James (GK), Tuck.
