Albion are set to sign former Scunthorpe United midfielder Matt Sparrow on a three-year-deal.

The 28-year-old will have a medical at the training ground on Tuesday morning, and is due to complete the paperwork in the next 48 hours.

A trainee at Glanford Park, Sparrow made 396 appearances for the Iron and enjoyed three promotions, before turning down the offer of a new deal at the end of last season.

Albion boss Gus Poyet has since succeeded in luring the goalscoring midfielder to the south coast to help fill the void left by Andrew Crofts's departure to Norwich City.

Sparrow netted 41 times in total during his 11 years at Scunthorpe, including a brace at Wembley in the 3-2 play-off final win against Millwall in 2009, as well as a crucial equaliser against Reading at the end of last season to secure the Iron's Championship status.

Poyet said, "For a moment we didn't think we had a chance of signing Matt, but after he became available he was willing to come down to see us. He has family in Eastbourne, which I think was the last little thing to convince him to come here.

"He has been playing regularly in the middle of the park for Scunthorpe. He has also played quite a few games wide on the right, but he prefers to play in the middle.

"He's a box to box player, and if we play how we want to, we will be able to release him to get forward and score goals.

"It's difficult to say that he is a direct replacement for Crofty, because Crofty was unique. But we were missing a box-to-box player, and Matt is good on the ball and will give us something extra in front of goal.

"He's another good addition to the team and I'm delighted that he's joined us."

Sparrow arrives at the Albion hot on the heels of Argentinian duo Agustino Battipiedi and Cristian Baz, who both signed one-year deals earlier today.
