The return of Danny Wilson to Withdean always brings a very civilised volley of applause whenever he makes his way to the visiting dugout.

Once upon a time, it might have been as Albion boss, but as things turn out he's back in the away section once more this weekend with his play-off chasing Swindon side.

Having spoken to him on the odd occasion, I always get the impression he has very fond memories of Brighton from his time as a player and appreciates the warmth with which he's greeted by Albion fans.

It seems to be a trend that is gradually disappearing as more and more former players are welcomed back to their old haunts with boos, regardless of their past service.

In the case of players who have disappeared on Bosman frees to join local rivals, or those who have had far from amicable departures, then I quite understand it and sometimes it adds to the occasion.

But I never quite get the point of laying into people who gave their best and simply weren't part of a new manager's plans. Speaking hypothetically, if Andrew Whing came back with Chesterfield next season for example, why would he deserve anything other than a decent reception? Rant over.

As for Danny Wilson's trips back, they have been pretty frequent. This is his sixth visit as a manger to Withdean, and there are two wins amongst that lot, a draw and two defeats.

The first of those losses, when Lee Steele's injury time header gave the Albion a win against Bristol City on April Fool's Day in 2002, was definitely one of Withdean's more dramatic finales.

At that point, it really felt like Peter Taylor's side were on their way to the Championship. Given Brighton and Swindon games can do late theatre, I advise no one to leave early.
