Albion's youth team slumped to a 7-1 defeat at Brentford in the Puma Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday, reviving memories of the first team's horror show at Huddersfield.

The Seagulls were 1-0 down with 55 minutes on the clock, but a spectacular collapse saw the Bees go on the rampage.

Only George Barker's strike - with the score a 5-0 - gave the Seagulls anything to cheer on a miserable morning for the scholars.

Director of football Martin Hinshelwood said, "We could make excuses that we had eight scholars missing, and that we started with three under-16s and two under-15s on the bench.

"But to be 1-0 down after 55 minutes and to go on and lose 7-1 is embarrassing. It's a humiliating result and totally unacceptable.

"The players don't need me to tell them that the performance wasn't acceptable. They know it wasn't good enough, and we'll be working hard this week and looking for a response this Saturday against Dagenham."
