Wilkins: That Was Tough

Posted on: Sat 19 Apr 2008

Dean Wilkins felt some of his players looked fatigued in the 2-1 win over Hartlepool, but was delighted they had the determination to secure a late winner.

He said, "I think that we have got a lot of players at the moment that physically look like they are coming to the end of the season and it was tough going for us, particularly in the second half where we could not retain possession of the ball and we could not get ourselves higher up the pitch.

"Consequentially we conceded from the pressure that we were put under by Hartlepool.

"I think the one real plus and bonus that we have had this year is that we have got a Plan B and a Plan C at times that really does help us in difficult circumstances, and we have gained ourselves three points again today.

"I thought we did enough in the first half to be in front at the break, in fact I thought we could have been two in front.

"We then had that 25-30 minutes spell in the second half where we did struggle to get hold of the ball and retain possession long enough to enable us to move higher up the pitch.

"That was a problem and if you keep giving the ball away then the opposition grow in confidence and put you under increased pressure.

"I think that in the final 15 minutes we suddenly got a little grip on the game again and that was when we scored the second goal."

Albion are still four points behind Leeds, but with two games still remaining, Wilkins insists there is all to play for.

"All the time that there remains a chance then we have to keep going for it.

"We will keep fighting until either the Leeds decision is made or until we mathematically cannot make it. We have to give the players enormous credit for keeping on doing that as well."
