Wilkins Happy With Three Points

Posted on: Wed 05 Mar 2008

Dean Wilkins was pleased to get another three points towards the play-off push, although not totally satisfied with his team's performance against nine-man Gillingham.

He said afterwards, "We set out to achieve three points at the start of the game, and that is what we achieved.

"There was also plenty of action for what was one of our biggest crowds of the season, so hopefully we have all gone home very happy.

"The amount of chances that we created, and the amount of goals that we scored, is a massive positive. If I had one concern to take out of the game then it would be our ball retention in the second half when they were down to ten men and eventually nine.

"I thought that we could have kept the ball a little bit better than we did, but by that time we were 4-1 up and as much as your want it to end up five or six, sometimes, maybe sub-consciously, players tend to take their foot off the pedal a little bit.

"Is it a good excuse? I'm not too sure. I would like us to provide the perfect performance for the supporters, but with four goals it wasn't too far short of that was it?"

With Steve Thomson complaining of a stiff neck before kick-off Wilkins was forced to throw new signing Ian Westlake straight into the action, and he was pleased with the midfielder's contribution.

"We were planning to start Ian Westlake on the bench but Thommo arrived at the ground with a stiff neck, which was getting progressively worse, so we threw Ian in at the deep end and he did fine.

"He is going to need time to get used to us and ideally it would have been perfect to put him on the bench, as we did with Glenn Murray at Northampton in his first game, but we put him straight in there and he has had to get to know everybody in 90 minutes of football."

There was however no place in the squad for Dean Cox.

"Wilkins revealed, "Dean Cox was dropped for disciplinary reasons that will remain in house. I don't intend to say any more about it, we will keep it in house and carry on working as we do. We will have to see how we go but at the moment he is not involved for Saturday."
