Football Outreach

Posted on: Fri 20 Mar 2009

Football Outreach (FOR) is the latest initiative from Albion in the Community to further push the boundaries of what can be achieved through football.

Using the club's extensive work in West and South Africa with the Coaching for Hope programme, the community development department has established that there were many other people who could benefit from a similar initiative.

Working in partnership with Coaching for Hope, FOR's aim is to identify and develop local coaches in underdeveloped areas across the world. Through football, it is hoped that FOR can bring children and communities together in places where conflict and poverty are a part of everyday life.

FOR officers were recently in Kosovo to develop a football curriculum that raised awareness of unexploded land mines as well as supporting de-miners. These de-miners have a crucial role to play in making towns and rural areas safe for children to play, and the club is delighted FOR is helping to create a safe environment for the children.

The club is also working in conjunction with Generations for Peace, who use sport to tackle the issues that surround conflict. Special focus is placed upon helping child soldiers break free from the conflict and live a more normal life. The work done by Albion in the Community officers has already helped kids throughout war-torn areas of Africa.

The Football Outreach programme is currently looking to develop relations with nongovernment organisations, as well as local business. Brighton-based ICP Search is the first business to provide support for the initiative. Gary Peters, Managing Director of ICP Search, is delighted to be involved. "I am thrilled to be proactively involved in such an exciting and unique programme. Having already travelled to Burkina Faso in West Africa with the charity to deliver AIDS awareness programmes I am now very excited to make the journey to Kosovo to help yet another worthy cause.

"The beauty of working with this project is that my team and I are helping to provide much needed support to families and individuals both locally and internationally, it's absolutely fantastic. Equally we are all passionate about supporting the club so it is adding a great team spirit to the company in these challenging times. This is just the beginning of a very exciting partnership and as a Brighton-based company we are delighted to be supporting Albion in the Community. We continue to be amazed by the success of the charity and hope this continues."
