Ferret's Season Bets
After a football-free couple of weeks where hopefully you will have been investing your European 2008 winnings wisely, it is time to begin our raids on the coffers of Bet365 for the new season.
Next week we'll be taking a look at the curtain-raiser up at Crewe, but this week we are taking a look at the long term League One bets that are going to boost our bank balances come May.
Starting with the outright title, Leeds (11/4) and Leicester (5/1) appear to have cornered the market and while Brighton are a lengthy 20/1 there is better value elsewhere and so this is a category that we will swerve for the time being.
Instead we will take a complete punt on Walsall in the "to be promoted" list. The Seagulls are only 13/2 to hit the Championship next season, but the Saddlers are 20/1. Ok - they are not an obvious selection, with most judges believing that Jimmy Mullen's side are more likely to be playing in League Two in 2009/10 - but they did finish in the top half last year. At one point looked like play-off contenders until a weak finish (two wins from their final 12 games) cost them their chances, and Richard Money his job as manager.
Enough talk about going up, what about going down? Albion are 7/1 to be relegated, which when compared with their promotion odds reveals that Bet365 are expecting a mid-table finish for Micky Adams. Well this judge does not believe that we will be troubling the relegation candidates as I am quite convinced of another top-half finish for the Seagulls!
Cheltenham (13/8) are vying with Stockport (7/4) as "favourites" in this category but as with Walsall, I am going for a long shot, and nominate Huddersfield (12/1) as the side most likely to under perform this season.
In the top goalscorer category, Albion have three candidates - Nicky Forster (20/1), Glenn Murray (25/1) and Jake Robinson (66/1). Two erstwhile Seagulls are also nominated - Alex Revell (25/1) and Bas Savage (66/1) - but for my money it is a two horse race. Jermaine Beckford is a valid favourite at 8/1, but I am plumping for league newcomer Aaron McLean (14/1). The 25 year old netted 33 times last season for Peterborough and with Leeds likley to share the goals around a bit, McLean represents genuine value.
Don't forget to place your bet with Bet365!
Summary
Walsall to be promoted @ 20/1
Huddersfield to be relegated @ 12/1
Aaron McLean to be top scorer @ 14/1
