Brighton and Hove Albion under-21’s first Premier League Division Two game ended with defeat to Blackburn Rovers, despite a spirited performance by Simon Ireland's side at Culver Road.

Albion provided a tough test for Rovers in their first game in the new league after being granted category one status last month.

In a tight and cagey affair Blackburn could have taken the lead in the seventh minute, when Jordan Preston stole possession and drove his shot just wide of the post.

The dangerous Modou Cham was next to try his luck after some good build up play from Rovers however he too fired wide.

John O’Sullivan then drove at the heart of Albion’s defence, but Joshua Smith was equal to his strike and saved well to keep the Seagulls on level terms.

A minute later, Smith was called into action again when he excellently palmed Preston’s effort onto the post and away to safety.

Albion gradually grew into the game and Jesse Starkey almost broke the deadlock, however he failed to generate enough power in his header to trouble David Raya Martin between the sticks.

Five minutes before the break, captain Bradley Barry was in the right place at the right time to clear Darragh Leniham’s drive off the line from Bradley Bauress’s well worked corner.

Two minutes into the second half, Blackburn took the lead when Preston headed home from Dean Rittenberg’s cross after a fine break away move.

Rovers almost doubled their lead a few minutes later when John O’Sullivan excellently found Rittenburg, however the latter fired wide.

With twenty minutes remaining, Robin Deen narrowly drilled wide from Barry’s cross before Will Collar headed over after Raya Martin lost control of the ball in Rovers’ goal.

Five minutes later the result was secured when Cham rifled home off the crossbar for Blackburn’s second with a point-blank finish from inside the six-yard box.

Nine minutes from time it was almost three but Smith saved well to deny Preston his second from close range and the Lancashire side secured all three points.
