The Irishman emphasised the need to improve defensively on Saturday.

Brighton & Hove Albion defender Shane Duffy urged his team-mates to keep things simple ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Barnsley, following only one victory in their previous four league games.

The Seagulls will be looking to secure their first away win since the 2-1 triumph over Fulham at the start of January, and the 25-year-old believes the team can benefit from doing the simple things right at Oakwell this weekend.

He said, “We need to get back to basics. I think we’ve maybe complicated things a little bit, we need to do the basic things right and be hard to beat.

“It’s been tough away from home recently, and we know we’ll have to be at it to get the three points and get back on track.

“I thought it was quite tough when we played them at home. They’ve lost a few players but just beat Villa 3-1, so they’re definitely no mugs and have gone under the radar.

“It’s a difficult away game, maybe similar to Brentford, but hopefully we can get a good start, keep a clean sheet and win the game.”

Albion’s visit to Oakwell comes before back-to-back home fixtures against promotion rivals Reading and Newcastle United, but Duffy highlighted the importance of not getting distracted and focusing solely on the trip to Oakwell.

“We go into every game the exact same way. I know everyone will be looking at the Newcastle and Reading game because they’re up there, but Barnsley is equally as important for us.

“If we don’t get three points there [at Oakwell], then it’s even bigger for us going into those games.

“We’ve got to look at Barnsley first. I know they’re massive games [v Newcastle and Reading] but we’ll deal with them at the time.

“This Saturday is huge for us, especially after a disappointing Tuesday night [v Ipswich] and the last couple of away games.”

Duffy believes Albion have not been getting the results to match their performances recently, but acknowledges the fact they’ve been fortunate to secure all three points at times during this season.

“We’ve played quite well at times recently but obviously the results haven’t been as good as they have been during the earlier part in the season.

“Earlier on in the season, we didn't play as well, but we were still getting the results. Maybe now it’s turned around and we haven’t really been getting the results.

“The last couple of weeks have been tough for us. Everyone has this during the season and maybe we’re going through it a little bit.

“But we’re confident and believe in ourselves. We’ve got a squad capable of bouncing back from a couple of bad away results, and I’m sure we can get back on track.”
