REPORT: ALBION 0 MILLWALL 1

Brighton & Hove Albion were defeated 1-0 by Millwall in a cagey contest at the Amex.

Sami Hyypia made two changes to the Albion side that lost to Derby, with Adam Chicksen returning from his loan spell at Gillingham to replace Joe Bennett at left-back and Greg Halford making his full debut alongside Lewis Dunk at the heart of Albion’s defence.

It was Millwall that started the better of the two sides and Albion had captain Dunk to thank after he produced a last-ditch block to prevent Lee Gregory’s goalbound effort.

Dunk was alert once more to clear a dangerous low cross by Scott Malone, but the visitors did find a way through in the 14th minute when Gregory finished well from Magaye Gueye’s scuffed shot.

Ten minutes later Lions keeper David Forde was alert to palm Jake Forster-Caskey’s long-range effort away from goal before denying Joao Teixeira before the interval.

Two minutes into the second half Teixeira played a good ball through to Darren Bent but the Aston Villa loanee couldn’t find the target.

Bent was in the thick of the action once more in the 55th minute however the striker failed to aim his header goalwards from Bruno’s cross.

Albion continued to press for an equaliser and Solly March fired wide unmarked from ten yards out.

With the Seagulls enjoying the bulk of possession, the game continued to be played out in the Millwall half and Teixeira saw his effort fly across the face of goal and inches wide of Forde’s post.

In the 74th minute substitute Paddy McCourt delivered an excellent deep free-kick that was headed back across goal by Gary Gardner, however no Albion player followed the ball in and the danger was cleared.

The Seagulls continued to press for an equaliser but the Lions defended resolutely.

In the last minute of normal time Teixeira delivered a teasing ball into Bent, however the striker fired wide, and with one last throw of the dice Teixeira picked out Gardner on the edge of the area, but the midfielder’s shot was blocked.
