REPORT: ALBION 2 CHELTENHAM 0

Brighton & Hove Albion progressed to the second round of the Capital One Cup after beating League Two Cheltenham Town 2-0 at the Amex.

It took the Seagulls 79 minutes to break down the Robins’ resolute defence and it came courtesy of a Lewis Dunk header.

With a minute remaining, Craig Mackail-Smith put the result beyond doubt by calmly slotting under Trevor Carson in the visitors' goal.

Albion had virtually all the ball but Cheltenham defended excellently and held the hosts off until the final flourish.

Brighton almost got off to the perfect start, however, but Dunk couldn’t direct Jake Forster-Caskey’s corner on target, instead heading over the bar.

Left-back Adam Chicksen was next to try his luck, fizzing a low drive just wide of the post on 12 minutes.

Forster-Caskey was the provider once more, this time for Inigo Calderon, whose effort bounced just wide of the post.

Albion's first effort on target came in the 23rd minute when Chris O’Grady’s glancing header was saved by Carson after a good ball in from Bruno.

Eight minutes into the second half, Chicksen found himself in space in the box, but two Cheltenham defenders put their bodies on the line to block his effort.

Kemy Agustien was next through on goal, but the midfielder couldn’t sort his feet out and the effort was cleared.

Town continued to frustrate and Sami Hyypia threw Kazenga LuaLua into the mix after 67 minutes, hoping the winger's pace would finally unlock a resolute defence.

Instead it was the winger's corner that made an impact but Dunk headed his effort over the bar.

The breakthrough finally came with just over ten minutes remaining when Dunk headed into the bottom corner after a peach of a delivery from Calderon.

Mackail-Smith then rounded off the scoring in the last minute to deservedly send Albion into the second round.

The 50/50 winners for Cheltenham are as follows:
